KINDERGARTEN ENROLLMENT FOR 2012-13
PRIORITY REGISTRATION BEGINS FEBRUARY 1st

Kindergarten
Beginning in 2012, SB1381 (Kindergarten Readiness Act) moves up the kindergarten entry date by one month per year through 2014. Children will be admitted to kindergarten if their fifth birthday falls on or before one of the following dates:

                        2012-13 school year              November 1
                        2013-14 school year                October 1
                        2014-15 and thereafter            September 1

Transitional Kindergarten
SB1381 also establishes Transitional Kindergarten (TK) as the first year of a two-year program that uses modified kindergarten curriculum that is age and developmentally appropriate.  Students eligible to participate in the TK program are those with fall birthdays for whom kindergarten is no longer available as the eligibility date moves forward.

A child is eligible for the transitional kindergarten program if his or her fifth birthday is:

2012-13 school year              November 2 through December 2
2013-14 school year               October 2 through December 2
2014-15 and thereafter            September 2 through December 2

IMPORTANT NOTE:
Governor Brown’s proposed state budget puts the future of California’s Transitional Kindergarten program in jeopardy. While statewide implementation is now highly unlikely, the final decision will actually not be clear for many months.

  • MPCSD will, therefore, accept applications for age eligible students to enroll in the TK program as a contingency in order to be prepared for either eventuality.
  • The online registration process may be completed beginning February 1, but enrollment will not be confirmed unless the state continues to mandate this program.
  • Parents are strongly advised to pursue alternative pre-school or childcare arrangements for their children, as necessary, for the 2012-13 school year.

Spanish Immersion Program
The District’s Spanish Immersion Program is also accepting applications from students who are eligible to begin kindergarten in the 2012-13 school year. The goal of this unique program is to provide an opportunity for children at an early age to develop literacy and fluency in both Spanish and English. Interested parents may obtain an application in their school office and will be required to attend a mandatory parent information meeting on either February 15, from 8:45 – 9:45 a.m. or on February 27, from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. in the District Office Board Room, 181 Encinal Avenue, Atherton. To be considered for the program, kindergarten registration must be complete and Immersion application received by no later than February 29.

Have you ever wondered why Atherton and Menlo Park are each in 3 different elementary school districts?
This and other fascinating questions are answered on our new District History page.  You can also find historical information about the estates that originally made up Menlo Park and Atherton, as well as early PTO records from 1924 through 1949 (we're still busy scanning, but there are a few years and fun pictures up).
